Artist Statement

Picture

Using traditional embroidery and quilting techniques, pushing them beyond their boundaries, I create both large and small carefully considered wall pieces that have a structural emphasis.

I see drawing as a process that goes beyond pencil on paper and into stitch, taking the view that making marks and creating surfaces with a needle is an extension of drawing.

I have also had a life-long interest in quilts - but lately with a keen sense of challenging that conventional form with its associations of domesticity and comfort. Bringing into this my textile work with its urban, industrial imagery challenges the viewer to question the purpose and function of a quilt as well as its usual association with typical 'feminine' imagery.

Teaching

I am available for workshops, teaching skills such as hand embroidery and machine embroidery with an emphasis on creativity and pushing the boundries of these skills. At present I am a tutor at the Eco Centre, Wirksworth, Derbyshire.
